Depression must first be understood before it’s treated. Depression is no joke; it is a very serious disease that affects millions and millions of Americans each and every year. The alarming dilemma is that over a third of those Americans will not seek any type of treatment. The most important is that adolescent depression should be treated as soon as possible. The old stereotypes of mental illness still bother too many people. People consider their reputation and what others will think of someone who is nuts. Depression has to be diagnosed before it can be treated. To be diagnosed, those that suffer have to seek assistance. That’s the terrible merry go round of depression.

Depression has many causes. Depression stems from chemical, emotional, environmental and even physical causes. DNA also has a role. Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line. It’s not just family history but also family dynamics. The stress of everyday life can be brutal. For some there is a constant struggle to survive from week to week. For others the stress comes from making it in the world. Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair. The list isn’t a short one.

Depression is often hard to find in its early form. It’s hard to see the symptoms even if a loved one suffers from this illness. Sadness on occasion is part of life. It’s common. The affects of depression go much deeper. It’s already too late for early detection when the symptoms interfere with life. Loneliness and general disgust with life are common for depression sufferers. That is why they need depression help immediately before it gets out of hand. Signs of hope in their lives are gone. Sleep habits and enjoyment from life no longer exist. At this point treatment has become literally a matter of life and death.

The afflicted needs a renewed sense of hope and meaning for an effective depression treatment. Psychotherapy often accomplishes this. This treatment can take months or years to bring about positive results but it is effective. The medical professional also has the option of prescribing anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celex, or Luvox. These drugs are effective but they are accompanied by many side effects as well. Fortunately, there are other safer solutions to overcome depression. There are also natural herbs that have been proven clinically to bring about positive results in treating depression as well. Another effective solution is a depression support group. Consult a doctor if you or someone you know shows signs of depression.
