Acid Reflux Treatment: Trauma in infant esophagitis.
Trauma can result in injury to the esophagus and subsequent esophagitis. This can be accidental or intentional.
Esophagitis can also follow treatment to or near the esophagus. Radiation for mediastinal disease can lead to esophageal inflammation and resultant stricture. These strictures develop between the first and tenth year after treatment.
A nasogastric tube can lead to trauma of the esophageal lining and esophagitis. Acid reflux treatment in such cases will help reduce acid that aggravates the trauma. The nasogastric tube can cause abrasion to the delicate lining of the esophagus.
One study in children with severe esophagitis with no positive causative factor suggested that the esophagitis may be due to enthusiastic suction at birth by nasogastric intubation. This type of esophagitis can be easily missed.
