Acid Reflux Treatment: Acupuncture for GERD.

- Image via Wikipedia
Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been used for centuries. The use of acupuncture in the West is increasing and many Physiotherapy Clinics offer acupuncture as standard treatment.
In the past there were risks of transmission of infective diseases from reused needles. Today, however, disposable needles are inexpensive and available in sterile packs.
Acupuncture uses specific points on the meridians of the body. The needles stimulate acupuncture points along the various meridians. Tests have shown that acupuncture stimulate the release of chemicals such as endorphins. Endorphins block pain reception and is generally regarded as natural painkillers.
Acupuncture has been used for various conditions with varying results.
Some acupuncturists believe that there is a role for acupuncture in treating bowel conditions but as an acid reflux treatment, results do not support this.
The risk from acupuncture are very few. The biggest risk is inserting the needle into vital organs. The most important is the lung. Puncturing a lung will cause it to collapse and result in respiratory distress. There are, however, only a few acupuncture points around the chest wall.
The most common side effects are fainting and dizziness.
